The 31-year-old was one of several players facing an uncertain future this summer as Rangers look to reduce their squad size and debt. But the versatile former Motherwell and Wigan player has apparently been earmarked for a role by Smith. McCulloch said: "It's looking as though I'll be staying at the club and that's something I'm happy about. "Last season was quite hard for me because I was in and out of the team a lot but I thought I did all right when I did play. "Obviously you want to be playing more football than I did last season but I've spoken to the manager and everything seemed to go well. "I'm looking forward to the challenge of playing again this season because it's a massive season for us all." McCulloch made 18 appearances last term and he is happy to fill in anywhere to increase his participation. "I enjoyed playing at centre-half last year but I'll play anywhere really," he told Rangers World. "I've talked to the gaffer about it and he's got an idea for me this season. "If it came to playing there again, I know I wouldn't be first choice but I'll happily fill in if there are injuries or suspensions and I know I need to be ready for that. "To be honest, I've never really held down a regular position in my career. "I'd obviously like to but it has always been this way, right back to when I turned 16 at Motherwell. "I made my debut there as a striker but then I played on the left, the right and up the middle under Billy Davies and Alex McLeish. "I quite like playing different positions as you get to know the game better that way and you're probably a handy guy to have around if you can be a bit more versatile."
