McCost hails cheeky hitman Boyd

Boyd netted the only goal of the game - and his 22nd of the season - with just four minutes to go to prevent the Scottish Cup fifth round replay at Ibrox being decided after extra-time - like the previous round against Hamilton.[LNB]Saints boss Gus MacPherson noted that Boyd's behind played a big part in Rangers finding themselves in front late on but Gers assistant boss McCoist pointed out that the man he regards as Scotland's greatest ever striker[LNB]was notorious for a similar tactic.[LNB]He said: "Arguably the greatest centre-forward our country has ever produced had a larger than normal derriere, if you like.[LNB]"I wasn't talking about me, and I know it's quite easy for you to make that mistake! I was talking about the best. If you use your bahookie, then fair enough.[LNB]"It's a great goal. I was speaking to the boys before the Hibs game, saying the lad Anthony Stokes has scored a couple of great goals this season and has used his body well.[LNB]"I've not seen it again but my initial reaction was that Boydy got his chance by using his body really well.[LNB]"People like Boydy only need half a yard to get his shot away. Turning people and holding people off is very important and I thought he did it very well.[LNB]"Once he gets himself in that position, you know there is a better chance than not that he'll finish it."[LNB]While most of the 31,000 crowd at Ibrox feared the tie was heading for extra-time, McCoist was optimistic Rangers would do the job in 90 minutes.[LNB]He said: "It's always a possibility but I won't lie to you, I felt quite confident that we might nick one.[LNB]"The most important thing from our point of view is that we were pushing forward and we were doing it with caution. I felt our discipline was very good at pushing forward."[LNB]But, despite claiming the decisive goal tonight, he feels it would be unfair to always rely on Boyd to dig Rangers out of trouble.[LNB]He said: "I don't think it's fair to put the pressure on Kris like that. He is always capable of scoring a goal but you always have to remain confident you will get a goal from somewhere and I wouldn't say it would be Kris all the time. But he does chip in with more than his fair share."[LNB]Saints boss MacPherson said: "It's always difficult when Boyd gets into that position because he can get his backside in there and protect it with his body.[LNB]"It was always going to be difficult here at Ibrox but I thought we were comfortable for long periods and had chances but you need a break."[LNB]The Buddies boss is now sweating over the fitness of Jack Ross after the full-back was injured in a collision with Kyle Lafferty.[LNB]MacPherson said: "He will have an X-ray tonight and then we will know the extent of the injury. The X-ray will be on the area at the bottom of his leg. There could be some bone damage but the X-ray will clarify that."[LNB][LNB]
