McCoist hopes Boyd stays at Ibrox

The striker is out of contract next summer and has yet to reach agreement on a new deal. Recent reports suggested the 26-year-old would be unwilling to accept a new contract on reduced terms and he has been linked with several clubs since a proposed move to Birmingham last January collapsed over personal terms. However, Boyd has already expressed his desire to remain at Ibrox and McCoist insists he is just as keen to see the prolific hitman pledge his long-term future to the club. "From my point of view, as the assistant manager, I think it would be great if Kris stayed," said McCoist. "We value his goals highly and I've said on numerous occasions that pound for pound I think he is the top finisher going in the country. "If we can provide him the ball in that area, he will score us goals. "So, from that point of view, it would be crazy for me to say anything other than I hope he stays." McCoist's own contract is up in January but he says he is more than happy to leave negotiations to manager Walter Smith, who is also in the process of thrashing out a new deal with new chairman Alastair Johnston. "I'm leaving that in the capable hands of Walter," he said. "We will see what happens but it's not something I'm worrying about. "We will hopefully get something sorted out but I'm just leaving that in the gaffer's hands." With a trip to St Johnstone looming this weekend, Rangers' recent away form is of more pressing concern for McCoist. Kenny Miller and Nacho Novo were both on the scoresheet in games against Celtic and Sevilla respectively at Ibrox, but the champions drew a blank against both Kilmarnock and Motherwell on the road. McCoist hopes the Old Firm derby triumph will act as the catalyst Rangers need to finally hit top form both home and away. "I hope that's the case," he said. "After the second half in Stuttgart, we were hopeful we could kick on from there and we didn't really to be honest. "We woke up on the morning of the Old Firm game with all sorts of injury worries and sickness and it wasn't the ideal team we planned to send out. "But thankfully the lads were great for us. "Andy Little got a hamstring injury in the first two or three minutes and it wasn't an ideal start but it goes without saying that the result is the most important thing in Old Firm games and we got the result. "Hopefully now we can kick on and get a bit of stability." He added: "We had draws at Motherwell and Kilmarnock and you have to be honest and say they are not the easiest of places to go to at the best of times. "But the disappointing thing was the lack of goalscoring opportunities we created in both of those away games. "That was a little bit of a problem for us. "We got Nacho's great goal against Sevilla and Kenny's two against Celtic. "It's been said 100 times but the only thing for goalscorers in terms of their confidence is scoring goals. Hopefully we have turned the corner. "The results were disappointing in terms of not winning the games, but more disappointing was the fact we didn't create a lot of chances and hopefully that won't be the case at the weekend."
