McCoist desperate for Boyd to stay

But the Ibrox number two does not believe the loss of the striker in January would necessarily lead to the Scottish champions surrendering the Scottish Premier League title.[LNB]The SPL's record goalscorer is out of contract at the end of the season and free to speak to other clubs this month, with Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan and former boss Alex McLeish at Birmingham reportedly interested in a January swoop.[LNB]Furious fans groups have warned of a revolt against season ticket sales if Boyd is sold but McCoist admits the club's hands could be tied if he fails to agree a new deal.[LNB]"I hear all the fans saying they want Boydy to stay but I just hope that they appreciate we are the exact same," he said.[LNB]"We would be crazy if we didn't want to keep our top goalscorer. The man is on absolute fire at the moment.[LNB]"But the situation is quite simple - his contract is up and he can exercise the right to speak to other clubs or speak to us about re-signing.[LNB]"I can speak for the rest of the coaches and the management when I say we all want Kris to stay and hopefully we can sort out a deal.[LNB]"I'd love to see him stay at Rangers and hopefully break more records and continue the way he is at the moment."[LNB]McCoist believes transfer activity at Rangers and Celtic this month could have a big say in the destination of the championship but says it would be disrespectful to the rest of the team to say their title hopes lie solely with Boyd.[LNB]He said: "I would never say that because it would be grossly unfair to the rest of the team.[LNB]"Kris Boyd is an integral and vital part of the team, you just need to look at his goals.[LNB]"But it would be very unfair of me to say that if we lose one player we will lose the title.[LNB]"It would be disrespectful to the rest of the players who have been on top form in what has been a great run recently."[LNB]Reports suggest Pedro Mendes - on the road to recovery after months on the sidelines with a knee injury - could be sold to fund a new contract for Boyd and help retain the services of other key personnel.[LNB]And, despite claims at the recent AGM that Rangers do not need to offload anyone in January, McCoist admits a high-profile departure could not be ruled out.[LNB]"We have to look at everything to be honest with you," he said.[LNB]"We are just the same as any other football club. If someone picks up the phone and puts an offer in for one of your players, you have to listen and you have to talk to the player.[LNB]"Then you have decisions to make. Does the player want to go? Do you want the player to go? All these things have to be taken into account.[LNB]"All I would say is that we don't have a big squad at the moment.[LNB]"The phone can ring but, personally speaking, I wouldn't be too keen on selling anybody.[LNB]"I would hope the players would like to stay as well but you would have to speak to them on that one."[LNB]Asked what he would do in Boyd's position, McCoist replied: "I would stay but that's just me.[LNB]"I don't know Kris's situation in terms of who has been on the phone to him or what's been offered.[LNB]"Kris has been fantastic for Rangers and Rangers have been fantastic for Kris.[LNB]"It's a good thing both of us have got at the moment and I would be disappointed if it ended."[LNB][LNB][LNB]
