McCoist: Celebrations are on hold

The early part of the week was spent basking in their Scottish Premier League success after clinching the title on the final day, ending a four-year wait for the silverware to return to Ibrox. But McCoist has told Falkirk they can forget about any complacency on Rangers part this weekend, claiming they will be fully focused on their defence of the trophy when the two clubs meet at Hampden. "It's not difficult to turn our thoughts to the cup final actually because of the importance of the game and the fact we've got a fantastic opportunity to win a league and cup double," said the assistant boss. "Last week at Tannadice was very, very special and I felt the players deserved it because of the way they approached it and the way they played. They were entitled to a few days of excitement afterwards. "But the importance of the game is a great thing and brings us all back down to earth. "We've still got unfinished business in the shape of the Scottish Cup and we want to lift that too." McCoist says Rangers are not even thinking about the possibility of being second best this weekend. He added: "I don't want to even contemplate defeat in the cup final because that's not something that we ever contemplate here. "We always think about winning games, and winning cups and winning trophies." Falkirk were also celebrating in the final weekend of the league campaign when a dramatic win over Inverness saw them retain their SPL status, with the Highlanders consigned to the First Division instead. "There are maybe a few teams I'd rather be playing rather than Falkirk in this final," admitted McCoist. "Arguably, on their day, they pass the ball as well as anybody in the league. But also they will be flying after the weekend they've had. "As genuinely disappointed as I was for big Terry Butcher, I was absolutely thrilled for big John Hughes and Brian Rice. "When you look back at the season, some of the stick that those guys have been taking is just outrageous. I was pleased for them and their team. "They've had a great season, with the League Cup semi-final, the Scottish Cup final and staying in the league. "I just look on them as being a really dangerous animal at the weekend and we will have to be well-guarded and on top of our game to win." McCoist added: "Once the players go out and do their best to win that cup, they can look forward to a really well-deserved and well-earned rest. "I can't tell you just how important I think it is for the players. "You just have to look at our performance against Kaunas to see a group of players who were physically and mentally drained. And that was after pre-season training. "Holidays were very short and not long enough. You need a break, you need to get away from everything, you need to get a clean-break. "This year, thankfully, they will get it and I think they really need it."
