MacDonald: Boyd should have no complaints

Monday saw Boyd sent home from the club's Murray Park training ground by boss Walter Smith, who was reportedly fuming over the player's attitude at being dropped for last Sunday's Homecoming Scottish Cup win over Hamilton.[LNB]Former Kilmarnock star Boyd - who controversially withdrew his services from the Scotland national side in October after George Burley left him on the bench in the World Cup qualifier against Norway - apologised to Smith the next day.[LNB]But he can now only hope for a substitute's spot at best in Sunday's Co-operative Insurance Cup final at Hampden.[LNB]MacDonald, who played for the Ibrox club in the 1970s and 80s, said how he had to "take it on to chin" after he was twice dropped after scoring hat-tricks and was also left out of a cup final team to accommodate a short-term loan player.[LNB]He said: "I scored a hat-trick against Kilmarnock when we won 8-1 and I was dropped for the midweek game against Aberdeen.[LNB]"I also scored a hat-trick in a European tie against Valletta in a 10-0 win and was out of the next game altogether against Dundee United.[LNB]"I wasn't even in the squad for the game.[LNB]"There were only two substitutes allowed in those days.[LNB]"Clubs didn't travel with big squads so I played for reserves at Ibrox that day and I scored another double.[LNB]"I was also left out of the League Cup final side in 1982 after Gordon Smith, now the SFA chief executive, came back from Brighton on a month's loan.[LNB]"The final was his first game so, as you can imagine, I wasn't too happy about that.[LNB]"I think he only played two or three games before he went back.[LNB]"What was even worse was that the manager at the time, John Greig, put on a defender, Ally Dawson, before me when we were getting beaten 2-1.[LNB]"I couldn't believe that![LNB]McDonald revealed how reaction to disappointment were generally different two decades ago.[LNB]He said: "There was no confrontation with the managers then; you had to take it on the chin.[LNB]"There were players who would knock on the door and say, 'I'm better than him, I should be in the team'.[LNB]"But I wasn't like that. You couldn't beat managers then.[LNB]"If you did confront them, you could end up falling out and that would just make things worse.[LNB]"Mind you, scoring a hat-trick didn't guarantee anyone anything.[LNB]"Ally McCoist scored a hat-trick in the 1983-84 League Cup against Celtic to win the cup and he infamously got stick off the fans a few years later in a cup game against Dundee at Ibrox.[LNB]"But Ally was a confident guy, even as a young man and you could see he was a good player.[LNB]"I knew he would bounce back; he wouldn't let a few fans get to him."[LNB][LNB][LNB]
