Light Blues sign Kerkar

Rangers have finally secured the signature of Salim Kerkar following protracted attempts to sign the French-Algerian midfielder.

He will join the Scottish champions on a short-term deal until the end of the season subject to international clearance, according to the club's official website.

Boss Walter Smith has been impressed by the 23-year-old, who has been training with the first-team squad at their Murray Park base.

But Smith appeared to end his interest in the player after it emerged former club Gueugnon were seeking compensation after releasing him in the summer.

However, a deal has finally been thrashed out and Kerkar will be eligible for first-team fixtures for the remainder of the season once he has gained the relevant international clearance.

Assistant manager Ally McCoist told www.rangers.co.uk: "He is a lad who is shaping up well. He is a nice lad but more importantly he has a good left foot."
