Levein: Change is needed

Scotland manager Craig Levein believes Scottish football is in need of change at a time when wide-ranging reforms are being mooted.

Henry McLeish has published the second part of his review of Scottish football, which called for radical changes, including a two-tier SPL with 10 teams in each division and the introduction of an earlier start date to the season. Those recommendations mirror proposals by the SPL's own strategic review group, which will be put before the 12 top-flight clubs on Monday.

Levein told Sky Sports News: "There are quite a few recommendations, both from Henry McLeish and also from the SPL themselves who are looking internally at the league structure. Whatever they decide, I'm sure it will be the best for Scottish football. Certainly, we do need to make some changes."

Along with an earlier start date, the possibility of a winter break will also be discussed at Monday's meeting.

Levein added: "With the winter break it's a question of when do we have it? It's a very difficult one.

"I don't think we could have a break that would take away all of the frost and snow and allow the games to go ahead. That would probably cover a three-month period.

"I think it's just to give the players a break, probably in January for a winter break. It's not something I've got a big input in to be honest."
