Le Guen stands firm
03 Jan 2007 - 08:10:06
Rangers boss Paul Le Guen claims he has the full backing of owner David Murray over his decision to strip Barry Ferguson of the captaincy and drop the skipper from the first-team squad.
Ferguson missed Tuesday's 1-0 victory at Motherwell after falling out with the Frenchman and the former captain could have played his last game for the Ibrox club.
Le Guen claims the popular midfielder has been undermining his position and took the decision in the best interests of the club.
"He tries to have too much influence," claimed Le Guen. "I thought of the interests of the team, the squad and Rangers.
"Even if I don't agree with him on the role of the captain, and I don't think he is as important as he thinks, you need to have a good captain.
"You need to have a captain who gives the right message."
Asked whether Ferguson will ever play for him again, Le Guen continued: "I don't know. Perhaps it would be difficult.
"But, at the moment, I think it is the right decision because of the situation. If he comes back to play with me, he must show other behaviour."
