"LAUGHTER AND TEARS" - The Jimmy Spiers Story

09 September 2011 23:32
Wee Rangers Club, Saturday, 17th September 2011 The night before the next Rangers v Celtic game the Wee Rangers Club will host an evening which will both prepare us for the match with an evening of laughter mostly supplied by guest speaker and ex-referee Bobby Tait and a guest speaker will remind us of the exploits of one of our old players - Jimmy Spiers.   Jimmy’s memory will be honoured by Dave Pendleton from Bradford and a fantastic football-themed buffet will take away the pangs of hunger!   Jimmy played for Rangers, Clyde, Bradford and Leeds - his greatest triumph coming 100 years ago when he captained Bradford and scored the winning goal in the FA Cup Final.  Five years later he would fall in battle at Passchendaele.   When war broke out Jimmy turned his back on the glory of the football field and at the then relatively advanced age of 29 he volunteered for service with the Cameron Highlanders.   He would attain the rank of Sergeant, be wounded in action and win the Military Medal for gallantry in the Second Battle of Arras.   In 1917 Jimmy would be fatally wounded at Passchendaele and was found dead in a shell-hole by his comrades.   The Braford City fans have done a fantastic job marking the 100th anniversary of Jimmy’s greatest hour and we will ensure that this exploit is honoured in his native city.   Tickets for the evening can be ordered via this link - http://tinyurl.com/Laughter-and-Tears         LEARN MORE ABOUT JIMMY If you’d like to find out more about Jimmy Spiers then have a read at this fantastic website - http://jimmy-speirs.co.uk   If you’d like to help ensure that the centenary of Jimmy’s death is properly honoured in 2017 then please contact Jimmy-Spiers@hotmail.co.uk
