Gers start Boyd deal talks

Rangers have opened talks with Kris Boyd's agent with the intention of keeping the Scottish Premier League's record goalscorer at Ibrox.

Boyd passed Henrik Larsson's top-flight record last month but is rumoured to be a transfer target for Premier League outfit Birmingham City with his Ibrox contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Cash-strapped Rangers have been told to reduce their wage bill this month but they have opened talks with Boyd's representatives just days after assistant manager Ally McCoist spoke of his hope that the striker could be persuaded to stay in Glasgow.

"I hear all the fans saying they want Boydy to stay but I just hope that they appreciate we are the exact same," he said.

"We would be crazy if we didn't want to keep our top goalscorer. The man is on absolute fire at the moment.

"But the situation is quite simple - his contract is up and he can exercise the right to speak to other clubs or speak to us about re-signing.

"I can speak for the rest of the coaches and the management when I say we all want Kris to stay and hopefully we can sort out a deal.

"I'd love to see him stay at Rangers and hopefully break more records and continue the way he is at the moment."
