Gers set to lose Bougherra

Rangers look set to lose Madjid Bougherra for their post-Christmas games after the defender failed to convince the Algerian FA to let him stay in Glasgow.

Bougherra was keen to play in three key SPL fixtures - against Hibs, Dundee United and Celtic - over the festive period, but Algeria are demanding that he joins up with his international team-mates on December 27 ahead of the start of the African Cup of Nations.

Under FIFA rules, Algeria are entitled to call up players 14 days before their first game of the tournament.

"We don't believe we are being unreasonable with our request," said Algeria assistant manager Zahier Djelloul.

"Almost every other African nation is taking the same stance."
