Gers retain their SPL crown
25 Apr 2010 - 16:29:14
Rangers have retained their SPL title with a 1-0 victory over Hibernian, Kyle Lafferty netting the all-important goal at Easter Road.
The Gers went into the game knowing that three points would secure a record 53rd domestic crown and Northern Ireland international Lafferty settled their nerves by taking down a long ball and driving a left-foot shot past Graeme Smith 17 minutes in.
After the breakthrough both sides struggled to carve out clear chances, although Hibs felt that they should have had a penalty when Derek Riordan went down under the challenge of Steven Whittaker.
However, Walter Smith's men held on to be able to celebrate fully at the final whistle.
Earlier in the day Celtic had made their deadly rivals wait a little longer before celebrating their title retention, as the Bhoys won 2-0 at Dundee United.
Diomansy Kamara broke the deadlock at Tannadice on the half-hour mark, running on to a Marc-Antoine Fortune pass before placing his shot beyond home keeper Dusan Pernis.
The home side were reduced to ten men just past the hour mark when substitute Jennison Myrie-Williams was shown a second yellow card, but it took Celtic until the final minute to make sure of victory.
Pernis was adjudged to have brought down Aiden McGeady and Robbie Keane stroked home the resulting spot-kick.
