Rangers insist there is no clause in Daniel Cousin's contract allowing him to leave Ibrox in the January transfer window.
Middlesbrough are being linked with the 30-year-old Gabon international who has made an impressive start to his career with the Gers following his summer switch from Lens.
He has found the net six times in 17 appearances for Walter Smith's side so far this season, and chief executive Martin Bain is keen to keep him at the club.
Bain told the Gers' official website: "I'm disappointed that someone has chosen to bring into the public domain details of a contractual agreement with a player.
"There's an exit clause in Daniel's contract but it cannot take effect until the end of the season.
"And the fee required under the terms of the deal is £3million."
