Gers cautious over Boyd comeback

He hopes the striker will be back in action without too long a spell on the sidelines but says the club are keen to err on the side of caution. Boyd was forced out of Sunday's Old Firm derby triumph with concussion and a heavy blow to his eye following a clash of heads with Celtic's Landry N'Guemo. Scans have revealed he has not suffered a fractured cheekbone but he does have a small fracture to his eye socket and is expected to miss the SPL clash with St Johnstone and the visit of Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League. "I spoke to Boydy on Sunday night and he was obviously very sore," said McCoist. "He had been for an X-ray and it was fine. He went for some scans on Monday and I spoke to him again. He is in a bit of discomfort and a bit of pain. "I believe on Monday morning it swelled up after he got up in the morning. "He blew his nose or he sneezed and the eye blew up and he got a bit of a fright. "But the scans aren't showing any fracture so that's a plus. "Having said that, it's a really sore one in a dangerous area and time will determine how he feels. "It's such a precarious position and an elbow or anything like that could do damage. "It's still early days in the healing process but we are hopeful he won't be out for too long." McCoist also eased concerns over Kevin Thomson, revealing he has not suffered a recurrence of the knee injury which sidelined him for several months. The 24-year-old made his long-awaited comeback this season after suffering a serious injury last November and hopes are high that he will make a major impact this term. He was forced to sit out the 2-1 win over Celtic after experiencing pain in his knee but McCoist said: "It wasn't the old injury, I'm led to believe. "It was just a bit of soreness in his knee and 10 days' rest will do him the world of good." Madjid Bougherra has recovered from the flu and has joined up with the Algerian national team, while Lee McCulloch is also expected to be back in contention once the international break is over. "Madjid had the same illness as Lee McCulloch and a couple of the coaches weren't feeling 100%," McCoist told Rangers World. "There was a bug going about and it floored Lee and Madjid but Madjid is on international duty and we will take it easy with Lee over the next couple of weeks. "It's great that we've got a break now and the cushion of 10 or 12 days."
