Gers boss hails evergreen Weir

It may have been his third 90 minutes in the space of five days but the 39-year-old showed no signs of fatigue as the Scottish champions triumphed 3-2 at Ibrox on Wednesday night. Weir pounced to claim the winner in the final minute after goals from Nacho Novo and Kenny Miller, with Stephen Ireland and Martin Petrov on the scoresheet for City. When asked about the efforts of his captain in pre-season so far, Smith said: "He handles the situation well and he has been doing that for a number of years now. He has shown he is not really getting caught out." Weir was omitted from Scotland boss George Burley's squad for this month's World Cup qualifier in Norway and Smith added: "That's up to George, he has enough problems picking an international team without me saying anything about it. It's up to him who he wants to pick and that starts and finishes there." This showing was a far more successful outing than the 3-0 defeat by Arsenal in Sunday's Emirates Cup match. Smith believes both matches will be beneficial when their Champions League campaign gets under way next month. He said: "I thought it was a good pre-season game for an hour before both teams started to make different changes. "It was a good match, there was a lot of good football from both teams and we could take a bit from it. "We moved the ball about well and created one or two opportunities. Overall, we have to be pleased by the standard of game and we are pleased with the way we are shaping up. "We took the level of game with pre-season in mind and getting difficult games and going back into Europe and we wanted to test ourselves against a good standard of teams. We have done that so far and we are pleased with the way it's going. "The shape of the team domestically may change a little bit but I just felt we had to use pre-season to try to lay something down and see if we can improve on the formation we had the last time we were playing in European games." City boss Mark Hughes added: "We enjoyed the game and I think it was quite evenly matched on the night. There were chances for both sides and we were able to give the majority of the squad a run out and some game-time, which is important."
