Fans chief sees more misery ahead

The Ibrox club slumped to one of their most embarrassing European defeats at the hands of the Romanian minnows, who are playing among the elite for the first time in their history. Walter Smith's men must now beat the same opponents away from home in two weeks' time to maintain realistic hope of reaching the last 16 of the competition. But, after back-to-back 4-1 home defeats in Group G, the Rangers Supporters Trust fear the club will struggle even to snatch third spot and a place in the Europa League knockout phase. RST spokesman David Edgar told Press Association Sport: "It's difficult to see, given the level of performances, where we're going to pick up points in the remaining matches. "We have to go to Unirea and it would be laughable to presume we're going to beat them after they've just spanked us on our own ground. "We've got to play Sevilla away and, again, that's an exceptionally difficult match. "Then we've got Stuttgart at home which, the way we're playing and the way they're playing, is looking like it could be a battle for third place. "It's hard to be optimistic after such a crushing defeat." Edgar, who has been attending Rangers games for a quarter of a century, said of last night's display: "It was equally as bad a European performance as I can remember, simply because of the stature and quality of the opposition. "The worst aspect of it was we can't pretend Unirea are a good side - they're not. They're a very, very average side and one that Rangers should have been capable of seeing off. "Last night witnessed a couple of the worst individual performances I can recall from Rangers players in a long time. "We have a lot of players who are out of form; we have a lot of players who simply aren't good enough to compete at Champions League level. "We have a threadbare squad; there's very little competition in certain places; there's very little cover in certain places." Edgar accused Smith of being "over-cautious" in persisting with his tactic of fielding just one striker in Europe against a side who were meant to be the whipping boys of the group. But he reckons Rangers' problems go much deeper than last night's result. "The cold reality is Rangers on the pitch this season have been awful," Edgar said. "Rangers off the pitch have been a shambles, which is why we haven't been able to address the on-field issues. "Perhaps we're waiting for the club to be sold and we're in this limbo situation where the fans will have to be tolerant. "But it certainly doesn't make it easier when you're paying £40 a head to sit and watch that abomination last night."
