Edu hoping Ferguson stays at Ibrox

Ferguson's future at Ibrox was thrown into doubt after he was stripped of the captaincy and banned by the club for his role in the infamous 'Boozegate' incident. His absence from the first team paved the way for Edu to force his way into Walter Smith's plans after spending a large part of his debut campaign kicking his heels on the sidelines. With a year left to run on his contract, it remains unclear whether Ferguson will still be a Rangers player next season, despite returning to play in the final two games, and he has been heavily linked with a move to West Brom. However, Edu believes the former captain still has plenty to offer the Gers and said: "I think it's great to have players like him around. "His reputation speaks for itself, he has done numerous things for this club and has been a great leader for the club. His time here has been tremendous. "If his time continues here, it will be great for the club and great for him as a player. "I think he still has a lot to offer to the game and to young players coming up here at Rangers. "Myself, I can learn from him and the other experienced players here." The American added: "The thing that's good about this team is that, as much as there is a lot of competition for positions, we all get along with each other and we all motivate each other to bring out the best in each other. "During my time here it has been great with the likes of Barry, Pedro Mendes, Steven Davis and Kevin Thomson because they push me every day to be a better player." Edu will be hoping to hold on to his place in the team as Rangers prepare for the Champions League next season after title success guaranteed them direct entry to the lucrative group stages. He said: "When I signed here, that's where I wanted to play and now it's a reality. "I'm definitely looking forward to that come next season, playing against some of the greatest teams in the world. "Hopefully we will get in a group with the likes of Barcelona, that would be amazing to play in their stadium and soak up the whole atmosphere. "As a young boy, you dream of playing in games like that, games which have a lot of meaning. Now I'm in a situation where that is a reality and I'm very pleased." Smith may strengthen his squad in the summer but Edu believes the current crop of players are good enough to cope with the cream of European football. "I don't see why not," he said. "We've got experienced players, guys who have played in the Champions League before. Pedro Mendes won the Champions League before. "I know we have to focus on what's in front of us right now, which is the Falkirk game. "Then we don't know what's going to happen in terms of player personnel, who's going to come in and who's going to go out. "But I think with the squad we have here we will be able to compete and show ourselves well." Rangers may still be in celebration mode following Sunday's title triumph but Edu insists they will be ready for Falkirk in this weekend's Homecoming Scottish Cup final. He said: "We are definitely all still enjoying it. It's a really big moment, a special moment for everyone here at the club. "But to win a double would be special as well so we will be focused on the weekend and try to win that game."
