Dons boss knows shock is unlikely

The Dons have not won at Ibrox in the league since 1991 but Calderwood believes Saturday would be the perfect time to end that dismal run. The Aberdeen manager said: "We are under no illusions about how difficult it is going to be. We have played well there in recent years and if we had taken our chances we could have come away with a victory. "Eighteen years is a long time for Aberdeen. It is the only ground that I have not won at since I came here and, having been born only a mile away from the stadium, it would be nice to get that monkey off my back." Calderwood knows if his side manage to come away from Ibrox with something then it will put pressure on fellow European hopefuls Hearts and Dundee United, who face each other later in the day. He said: "I don't think Hearts and Dundee United would be too happy if we won but we just have to look after ourselves. "If we get a draw and Hearts and Dundee United draw or Hearts win then that may be a good point for us. "Rangers have got to win so I think a draw would be a better result for us. With us playing early doors, if we got something, it would certainly prick a few ears up at Tynecastle." Walter Smith's side surrendered control in the title race to arch-rivals Celtic by drawing 1-1 at Hibernian on Wednesday evening. And Calderwood has warned his players to expect a backlash on Saturday. He said: "It was always going to be hard for us down there but the Hibernian result means that they have to win the game and they will also be looking to score a few goals. "But perhaps that may open things up for us if they are throwing people forward. "I'm sure Walter wasn't happy with the way they played in the first half against Hibs but they certainly sorted it out in the second half. I'm sure that is how they will start the game on Saturday." The Aberdeen manager is looking forward to again savouring the "special atmosphere" generated at matches between the Dons and the Light Blues. "I have been to Ibrox when Dundee United and Hearts have been there and it is nothing like an Aberdeen game," he said. "It is as close as you get to an Old Firm match when Aberdeen go there. It is a dream to take Aberdeen to Ibrox as it is such a wonderful atmosphere." Calderwood has been impressed by the flexibility shown by Richard Foster in his side's previous two matches. The full-back was deployed as a makeshift centre-half against Dundee United before being moved to the centre of midfield against Hearts to neutralise the threat of Bruno Aguiar. Calderwood added: "All credit to him because he has been absolutely fabulous. He has grown into a very important member of the squad because of his versatility."
