Davis: Title race not over yet

28 January 2010 16:14
A 2-0 win over St Mirren allowed the Scottish champions to strengthen their grasp on pole position after Celtic slumped to defeat against Hibernian.[LNB]Davis knows Rangers will now be seen as firm favourites to retain the championship, particularly as they have managed to grind out results despite seeing their squad decimated by injuries this month.[LNB]But the midfielder is also well aware of just how quickly circumstances can change after Rangers clawed back a seven-point deficit to triumph on the final day last term.[LNB]He said: "We are in the position in the league that we want to be in.[LNB]"But we have seen over the last couple of seasons both ourselves and Celtic being cut back in the league so it's important just to focus on each game as it comes.[LNB]"There is still a lot of football to be played."[LNB]Rangers were boosted by the return of Kenny Miller, Nacho Novo and Steven Naismith for the trip to Paisley, albeit Miller is struggling with a hamstring injury again and is now a slight doubt for the visit of Falkirk at the weekend.[LNB]Top goalscorer Kris Boyd remains on the sidelines as he continues his recovery from a hernia operation, while Madjid Bougherra has been unavailable for several games while representing Algeria at the African Nations Cup.[LNB]"It's been a difficult time for us but we are starting to get players back now," said Davis.[LNB]"This month, in particular, has been quite hard on the boys.[LNB]"We have been missing some important players recently and it's important to get them back fit and get the team going again.[LNB]"But it's a chance for some of the other lads to come in and do a job and give the manager something to think about.[LNB]"There is a good team spirit at the club."[LNB]Davis grabbed the opener - and his first goal of the season - with just two minutes gone last night, before Novo sealed the win against a Saints side who always looked capable of hauling themselves back into the game.[LNB]However, the biggest cheer of the night came from the travelling support when news filtered through of Celtic's defeat at Parkhead.[LNB]But Davis insisted: "Going into the game, we were just concentrating on ourselves.[LNB]"The pitch was difficult to play on at times and it was hard to get the ball down and play.[LNB]"But we showed a good level of determination and work ethic and got the result in the end which was good.[LNB]"It was a difficult match and we didn't play to the best of our abilities.[LNB]"You always look to get an early goal in these games, which can stand you in good stead, and then Nacho got the clincher."[LNB][LNB] Rangers v Falkirk.
