Davis points the way for Rangers

Davis freely admits their 1-0 win over Falkirk on Sunday was one of their worst performances of the campaign but had no complaints about the outcome. Kris Boyd grabbed the only goal of the game early on and Rangers managed to hold on to move back within three points of Celtic despite the best efforts of their hosts. Events on the field have been overshadowed by the club's decision to suspend skipper Barry Ferguson and goalkeeper Allan McGregor following their behaviour while on international duty with Scotland last week. But, as far as Davis is concerned, the rest of the team still has the task of winning a title to contend with. He said: "The ultimate aim was to go to Falkirk and get the three points and get ourselves back to winning ways, especially after the last couple of results we have had in the league. "That was the most important thing. "We knew it was going to be difficult, and we didn't play as well as we would have liked, but we got the result in the end. "It's probably the worst we have played in terms of possession of the ball. Fair play to Falkirk, they did well in possession. "But we got the opportunity and it gave us something to hold onto and we got the result in the end." Celtic had moved six points clear at the summit of the SPL with an emphatic win over Hamilton 24 hours earlier. But Rangers' own victory, albeit far less convincing, was enough to keep them within touching distance of their rivals. Davis added: "Results, especially at this stage of the season, are the most important thing. "We have to keep winning games and put as much pressure on Celtic as possible. "We managed to do that at Falkirk and we have another big game on Wednesday." Next up is a visit to St Mirren, another club fighting for survival at the bottom of the table and who have already inflicted a shock defeat on Rangers earlier in the season. Davis said: "We have dropped points away from home this season and that's an area where we have to do better. "We need to get consistency away from home. There are eight games to go now and we just have to keep putting pressure on Celtic and continue to win our games." Although reluctant to discuss the situation with Ferguson and McGregor, Davis was full of praise for David Weir, who has been given the captain's armband until the end of the season. Speaking of the veteran defender's display at Falkirk, Davis enthused: "He was outstanding. He is a leader all the time whenever he plays. "He is a calming influence at the back and he showed that again on Sunday."
