Davis: Old Firm switch just a dream

Rangers midfielder Steven Davis admits he misses playing in the English Premier League but doubts the Old Firm will ever be able to join up.[LNB] The Northern Ireland international joined Walter Smith's side from Fulham in 2008 in a £3m move after a successful loan spell at the club he supported as a schoolboy.[LNB]Davis, 25, is one of Rangers' most saleable assets and his revelation will do little to calm the nerves of Light Blues fans who have already seen six players leave the cash-strapped club this summer.[LNB]The former Aston Villa midfielder, preparing for Saturday's friendly against Newcastle United at Ibrox, insists the solution to his frustrations would be for the Old Firm to move to England - but accepts that is an unlikely scenario.[LNB]"I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss playing Premier League-standard teams every week and it would be hard not to miss it," said Davis, who has been recently linked with Everton.[LNB]"Without being disrespectful to the SPL, I think everybody connected with Rangers would like nothing more than to be taking on sides of that calibre all the time.[LNB]"That's why we find our pre-season games against the big English sides so enjoyable. It's a real opportunity for us to show what we're capable of.[LNB]"Sadly, I think that's all we'll be able to settle for because as much as I'd love to see us move to the Premier League, I don't think it will ever happen.[LNB]"There are pros and cons attached to the argument about whether us and Celtic should be allowed to join it or not.[LNB]"For our club to keep progressing and making the strides we'd like to make, I think we'd perhaps need to be part of the Premier League but I just don't see it happening.[LNB]"Because of that, we need to make sure we keep qualifying for the Champions League instead.[LNB]"Taking part in that competition is such a big draw when you're at Rangers.[LNB]Davis has also spent most of his time at Ibrox playing wide on the right as opposed to in his favoured central midfield position.[LNB]With Kevin Thomson leaving for Middlesbrough, Davis will revert back to the middle but he knows his versatility may cost him if manager Smith brings in another central midfielder.[LNB]But Davis told Rangers News: "I'm not worried about that, not at all.[LNB]"If I have to play on the right, I'll play on the right and it's not a big deal.[LNB]"The way things are looking just now, it looks as though I'll be put in the middle this season but I know how quickly things can change.[LNB]"For me to keep progressing, I think I maybe need to play in a more central role and I hope that in turn allows me to have a better season than I had last year.[LNB]"Last season I probably had my best spell of the season around December and January and it was at those times I was playing through the middle.[LNB]"To be fair to the manager, with the way he set up the team I played on the right a lot but I was still able to tuck in.[LNB]"I wasn't an out-and-out winger as such but it was still good to add a couple of extra strings to my bow and be a little bit adaptable."[LNB]Former Rangers striker Peter Lovenkrands hopes to make a scoring return to Ibrox at the weekend with Newcastle United.[LNB]Lovenkrands joined Rangers in June 2000 from Akademisk Boldklub and went on to play 182 times for the Light Blues, scoring 54 goals including a dramatic last-minute winner against Old Firm rivals Celtic in the 2002 Scottish Cup final at Hampden.[LNB]He told Rangers News: "It's going to be strange for me going through the front doors at Ibrox and walking left and not right but I just can't wait to run down the tunnel.[LNB]"I still love Rangers and the first thing I look for after our matches is their results just to make sure they have won.[LNB]"The club means a lot to me so to play in front of the Rangers fans will be very special and it's something I've always hoped would happen, now the chance has come which is great.[LNB]"Newcastle is a massive club, just like Rangers, and both have unbelievable fanbases. There are definitely a lot of similarities there.[LNB]"So I'm really looking forward to the match and if I can score past Allan (McGregor) that would be nice.[LNB]"We keep in touch and joked about it over the summer when we were on holiday together so to find the net would be a great feeling."
