Damage limitation for Gers - Weir

Walter Smith's side knew they would finish bottom of Group G regardless of the outcome at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and an early Frederic Kanoute penalty put them on the way to a fourth loss from six games.[LNB]The hosts dominated the remainder of the game but failed to add to their tally, and Weir admitted it had been a tough night.[LNB]The 39-year-old told Sky Sports: "They're a good side, by far the best in the section in my opinion. You've got to give them a lot of credit. We were just trying to minimise the damage."[LNB]Despite their struggles, Weir believes Rangers' record this season is not an accurate reflection of their form.[LNB]He continued: "It could have gone better within games. We've had chances and that little bit of luck has gone against us.[LNB]"But we haven't grasped chances when they've come our way. Two points, I think we're better than that."[LNB]Smith was pleased with the work-rate of his side but admitted they were let down by a lack of creativity as they struggled to create anything more than a couple of late half-chances.[LNB]He told Sky Sports: "We worked very hard. We were a little bit slow to start and after that we didn't create very many opportunities. But we were up against an excellent side and I'm pleased the way the boys worked.[LNB]"We haven't got a great deal of creativity and that's been a fault for the last period of time.[LNB]"I'm disappointed in losing but in our three away games we've acquitted ourselves far better than the home games, which perhaps sums up this campaign.[LNB]"We can play better than we have done, in the home games especially. The Champions League is unforgiving when you're not at the top of your game and we haven't been."[LNB]Rangers' week has been dominated by uncertainty over the future of their managerial team, with Smith, assistant Ally McCoist and first-team coach Kenny McDowall all agreeing to stay on without signing new contracts while the club look for a new owner.[LNB]And the manager knows he can take nothing for granted, adding: "The results haven't been good and if you're a manager and the results haven't been good you know the consequences."[LNB][LNB]
