Clubs back SPL postponements

The Scottish Premier League's decision to act quickly and postpone this weekend's fixture card has been backed by top-flight clubs.

The SPL confirmed on Wednesday that all six games set to take place on Saturday had been called off due to severe weather conditions.

Rangers were set to host Hearts at Ibrox and midfielder Lee McCulloch hopes another free weekend will help ease the Scottish champions' injury worries. He said: "It will probably help us out injury-wise in terms of getting numbers back for the two games we've got next week. The weather has obviously been bad, so it was probably the right decision."

Fellow midfielder Steven Davis added: "I can totally understand why the games have been called off. There has been heavy snow all week and you don't want to risk any injuries to the players and of course to the supporters as a result of travel difficulties. It's the right decision but at the same time it's frustrating to have two games in a row called off."

Hearts boss Jim Jefferies had no complaints about the SPL's decision.

He told Hearts News: "I was a bit surprised that the decision was made so quickly but it was a no-win situation for them. They have been criticised in the past for not calling games off early enough but fair dos to them on this occasion.

Celtic were set to travel to Aberdeen for a lunchtime kick-off on Saturday. Injured captain Scott Brown said: "I think it's the right decision. It's been hard for people to get into training, never mind the games."

Kilmarnock missed out on a trip to Motherwell and boss Mixu Paatelainen said: "I was disappointed when I heard the games were postponed, that was my initial reaction. But I do understand the reasons behind the decision. Taking into account the weather forecast, I think it was a sensible decision.

"The conditions would have been very dangerous for the supporters to get to the matches so I can understand the decision being made early."

The other games postponed were Hibernian v St Mirren, Inverness v Dundee United and St Johnstone v Hamilton.
