Chick Young calling our Chairman a liar: will RFC take action?

03 April 2011 19:27
The club are often quick to act on personal slights, so perhaps this may be a good time to set a standard for future action. Traynor v Young is a mismatch of Epic proportions; if by Epic you mean Jim Martin fighting Roddy Bottum. After some clarification from Chick on his story and the BBC view on what was said and meant by the Chairman of The Rangers, Traynor pressed Young on the matter of the nod, and was quite clear on Alastair Johnston denying the story as reported by the BBC and published in the name of Chico - namely, that Johnston had said Rangers could go out of business. "Do you have a single quote to back up your story...That backs up your intro, that Rangers could go bust?" Jim Traynor, Sportsound, BBC Radio Scotland, Saturday April 2nd, 2011 "Yes, I have a nod of the head!" Chick Young. All darkly comedic and the beginnings of a minor scrap but not yet truly noteworthy, but then Traynor turned up the heat. When he moved on to ask if Chick was calling Alastair Johnston a liar, the following exchange took place: CY: "He said to you he didn't admit it at all?" JT: "Yes." CY: "Well, in that case he is a liar, yes." CY: "Either I am or he is." Richard Gordon jumped in, the way a terrified parent leaps into the water when he sees his child struggling under the surface. Later on Richard tried to state the party-line: "He didn't actually say that Alastair Johnston had lied." Richard Gordon Later again followed by: "Jim's trying to get you into bother by suggesting you called Alastair Johnston a liar." He did, Ricky, on your show, just a few minutes before. You saying he didn't is admirable, Red Adair style, fire-fighting, but it makes you...guess what...a liar. "I think somebody in a position of authority at the BBC should have a whisper in your ear and tell you: enough's enough. You're in enough trouble already." Traynor on Chico. The argument between Traynor and Young, with occasional wisdom from Telegraph journalist Roddy Forsyth and increasingly desperate intervention and notable 'dulling' of the mics by Radio Scotland chair, Richard Gordon, was possibly the best entertainment on the station since Naked Video. The BBC initially ran a story about Rangers' financial results with a misleading headline relating to debt; this was changed, but their later story, from Young, was clearly deeply problematic. For Young to then allow himself to state, live on national Radio, that the Chairman of The Rangers is a liar is completely unacceptable - not to mention actionable -  and surely cause for the Club to make clear their displeasure. Young's gift for the gaffe, and his unending ability to invent exclusives make him a figure of fun. But one we pay for. So I think, all things considered, retirement beckons: and an early one at that.
