Celtic win can aid Old Firm rivals

The Hoops play the first leg of their play-off round against the Gunners on Tuesday night, with a place in the lucrative group stage at stake. Rangers have already qualified as Scottish Premier League champions but currently find themselves among the third seeds ahead of next Friday's draw. They need two of Arsenal, Lyon, Sporting Lisbon and Panathinaikos to lose their play-off round ties to claim a place among the second seeds. That would see them avoid the likes of Inter Milan, Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow, AZ Alkmaar and Juventus when the draw takes place on August 27. Rangers and Celtic need to do well in Europe this season to ensure the Scottish champions continue to gain direct entry to the Champions League. As it stands, Scotland are ranked 13th by UEFA, meaning this season's European Cup winners must secure direct qualification through their own domestic league if the Scottish champions are to qualify automatically.
