Burley hope for rested Weir
17 Mar 2008 - 15:01:44
Veteran Rangers defender David Weir has been left out of the Scotland squad for next week's friendly international against Croatia.
However, boss George Burley insists Weir's omission does not necessarily mean the former Everton star's international career is over.
Burley said: "I spoke to Davie last night and it's fairly clear that, considering the amount of games he's played this season and his age, he's done incredibly well.
"But to ask him to play another game would be too much, and for Scotland's point of view we've got to look at other options as well.
"But I certainly haven't ruled him out for the World Cup qualifiers. He's still playing exceptionally well. At his age he's not going to play forever but he's done terrifically well for Rangers and Scotland of late.
"But I think with a friendly game we can give him a little break and look at other players."
The full Scotland squad is:
Gordon (Sunderland), Marshall (Norwich), McGregor (Rangers), Alexander (Burnley), Anderson (Sunderland), Berra (Hearts), Caldwell (Celtic), Dailly (Rangers), Hutton (Tottenham), James McEveley (Derby), Stephen McManus (Celtic), Gary Naysmith (Sheffield United), Scott Brown (Celtic), Barry Ferguson (Rangers), Darren Fletcher (Manchester United), Paul Hartley (Celtic), Lee McCulloch (Rangers), Stephen Pearson (Derby), Barry Robson (Celtic), Gary Teale (Derby), Kris Boyd (Rangers), Steven Fletcher (Hibernian), James McFadden (Birmingham), Shaun Maloney (Aston Villa), Kenny Miller (Derby), Garry O'Connor (Birmingham).
