Broadfoot: Fergie's welcome to stay

Deposed captain Ferguson has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the club and former Light Blues boss Alex McLeish on Wednesday confirmed his interest in bringing the midfielder to Birmingham this summer. Ferguson, 31, still has a year left on his Rangers contract but his Ibrox career looked over in April thanks to his role in the infamous 'Boozegate' saga. He returned to play a part in a thrilling end to the season which saw the club clinch the double and led to Ferguson being cheered to the rafters by delirious supporters. Full-back Broadfoot said: "It's up to him and if he does stay, I think every player here is happy for him to do that. "Barry's a good player, he's been a great servant to the club but if he does go, he goes in the best way possible he can by winning the double. "With the way Barry finished the league and the reception he got from the fans, he might turn around and say, 'I want to stay'. But it's up to him." Broadfoot is also out of contract next summer and his agent has been trying to secure an improved deal. The Scotland defender said: "I get the feeling that I'm wanted here. I've been told that. I don't see me moving in the near future." The 24-year-old has been sidelined for three months and is expected to be out until November after undergoing foot surgery. "After rehab, hopefully I can get fit and strong enough to push for a starting place again. That's what I'm looking forward to," said Broadfoot, who refused to put a timescale on his recovery. "It just depends on how quickly and well my rehab goes. "Every player wants to play in the Champions League and it's great for a club like Rangers to be back in it. "From a player's point of view, it's the biggest stage you can play at in club football. "Just now, it's just about resting really. I'm about a month into it - it's three months without any weight bearing. "After that, my rehab will start but for the moment I'm sitting about, keeping it elevated and keeping myself occupied. "I'm hoping I can eventually get fit and strong enough to push for a starting place again. That's what I'm looking forward to. "This is the longest I've been out injured and it's probably the first time I've been out for more than a month. "Generally speaking, I'm quite bored and the Xbox is keeping me going as much as anything." Broadfoot also played down an incident last month which saw a poached egg explode in his face after he removed it from the microwave. "My face is fine," said Broadfoot, who required hospital treatment. "I had an accident with some boiling water and a poached egg, which was pretty sore." Broadfoot is expecting a Celtic backlash next season after Rangers ended their three-year reign as Scottish champions. "Celtic are a quality side and they're going to be hurting after losing the title to us this season," he said. "They'll be wanting it back but we've got a taste for winning it now and our hope is that we'll go on and do that again. "At a club like Rangers, you need to try to win every competition you go into and that's what we'll be looking to do next season." Meanwhile, the Scottish Football Association have confirmed their General Purposes Committee discussed a complaint from Aberdeen earlier this month about Rangers and Celtic making illegal approaches for young players. However, the allegation was found to be unproven.
