    Boyd helps Gers bounce back

    05 Dec 2009 - 16:58:13

Rangers responded well to last week's shock defeat at Aberdeen by beating rock-bottom Falkirk 3-1 as the top four all won.

Kris Boyd grabbed a brace for the Gers, registering his 150th Scottish Premier League goal in the process, before Kenny Miller added a third from the penalty spot.

Madjid Bougherra crossed for Boyd to open the scoring in the 17th minute and the former Kilmarnock forward made it 2-0 nine minutes before half-time when he turned Miller's low cross past Bairns goalkeeper Robert Olejnik.

Pedro Moutinho reduced the deficit in the 41st minute but Miller's 74th-minute penalty ensured the Gers would win their eighth game of the campaign after Darren Barr had brought DaMarcus Beasley down.

Celtic remain two points clear at the top of the table though after beating the Dons 3-0 at Parkhead.

Scott McDonald's 13th goal of the season six minutes before the interval ended the visitors' resistance, the Australian turning Andreas Hinkel's cross past Aberdeen keeper Jamie Langfield.

Giorgios Samaras made the points safe with two second-half goals and the visitors were forced to play for most of the second half with ten men following Jerel Ifil's dismissal.

Third-placed Hibernian continued their fine recent form by beating Motherwell 2-0 at Easter Road.

Former Arsenal and Sunderland striker Anthony Stokes beat the offside trap to register his fifth goal of the campaign in the closing minutes of the first half and Colin Nish made the points safe with a second goal in the 56th minute.

Dundee United remain fourth after beating St Mirren 3-2 at Tannadice.

Damian Casalinuovo gave the Terrors a 29th-minute lead and Craig Conway doubled their advantage just before the interval.

However, after Morgaro Gomis saw red after the break, United were forced on to the back foot for a while after Lee Mair's shot was deflected into his own net by Darren Dods just past the hour mark.

Jennison Myrie-Williams' 79th-minute goal eased the home fans' nerves and, although Stephen O'Donnell made it 3-2 with five minutes left, Craig Levein's side hung on to claim another three points.

Finally, former Sunderland and Coventry City striker Kevin Kyle netted his seventh goal of the season in the 15th minute as Kilmarnock beat St Johnstone 1-0 - only their second victory of the season.
