Alexander's happy birthday

Neil Alexander hailed his surprise Europa League start against PSV Eindhoven as the perfect birthday present.

The goalkeeper, who turned 33 on Thursday, was given the nod for the last 16 clash in Holland and repaid boss Walter Smith's faith by helping to earn Rangers a goalless draw.

Alexander said: "A clean sheet is one of the best birthday presents I could have asked for. It was a really important game for the club and it was important that I went out there and did my best and try to get a result. We would have taken that 0-0 before the game."

He added: "It was a wee bit disappointing that we didn't get that away goal with the chances that we had but a goalless draw is a great result and we can take that back to Ibrox and give it a right good go with 50,000 fans behind us."

Alexander paid tribute to captain David Weir and the rest of the rearguard for making his job easier on the night.

He said: "I thought our defence was outstanding and they made my night a lot easier.

"I expected to be really busy tonight but I really only had one or two saves and they mopped up the rest.

"So full credit to Davie Weir, Kyle Bartley and Madjid Bougherra. They were outstanding, as were the other boys.

"It's a hard place to come to and to get a clean sheet and still be in the tie means we have a great opportunity at Ibrox."
