Alexander hits out at claims

Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander believes he is the victim of a smear campaign as his contract at Ibrox runs down.

The 35-year-old is one of the biggest earners at the Third Division champions, and his current deal expires at the end of the season. Alexander insists he is prepared to take a major pay cut to stay with the club, but he reckons Rangers have no interest in conducting talks on a new deal. While Alexander has been prevented from speaking to the media for four months by Rangers, the stopper has become increasingly frustrated by a string of stories claiming he is holding the club to ransom. Alexander said:

"I have to speak out and clear my name. I can't just sit back and take this kind of stuff anymore.

"I've not done any interviews with the press since before Christmas. The club told me I couldn't speak to anyone because of my contractual situation and I accepted that.

"But since then there has been a steady stream of misinformation about my situation appearing in various newspapers. As a result Rangers fans have been given a false picture of what is going on.

"What I can't have is people being given the wrong idea and thinking badly of me as a person. It's important to me the fans know the truth so that, if I am leaving them, then at least I'm leaving with my head held high."
