Alexander: Gers spurred on by miss

Rangers clinched the SPL championship with a 3-0 win over Dundee United at the weekend to finish four points clear of rivals Celtic. The celebrations at Tannadice were in stark contrast to the disappointment felt at Aberdeen 12 months ago when the quest for a quadruple eventually took its toll and Rangers surrendered at the final hurdle. Alexander said: "We tasted the other side of the coin last year and it was tough. "We have had a whole year to try to put that right and we have done it. "Now we are going to really enjoy it. It's fantastic, the greatest feeling ever. It's a dream come true for everyone. "It's been a long time coming and we are just delighted to get the trophy back to Ibrox. "The boys have really used our strength in depth this year. We have used everyone in the squad and everyone has done a fantastic job. "They can hold their heads up high. Everyone deserves the medals and the celebrations because it has been a real team effort this year." SPL success means Rangers have secured their place in the group stages of the Champions League, having crashed out at the qualification stage at the start of the season. "It was massive for the club, the chairman and the manager," said Alexander. "It's huge for the players. We knew the pressure was on, we had to deliver. "We made it hard for ourselves at times. It has been a season of ups and downs, highs and lows. "But, at the end of the day, we are there and it's a fantastic feeling." Alexander took over the gloves from Allan McGregor in the wake of the 'Boozegate' affair and hopes he can hold onto the number one jersey when Rangers face the cream of European football in the Champions League. He added: "I'm not going to count my chickens as to whether I'll be playing or not. "Just for the club to be in the Champions League, and the money that will bring, hopefully we can bring some players in and strengthen the team and that can only bode well for the team." At times success looked unlikely for a Rangers team which fell seven points adrift of Celtic at the turn of the year. Alexander added: "It has been a funny season, there has been a bit of inconsistency from us. "But we knew what we had to do, we put in a fantastic performance and we deserved it."
