Townsend, Cesar, M'Bia? Who has shone this season for doomed QPR?
Although it has been a miserable season for Rangers and their supporters, they have possessed some great players who are going to be widely sought after in the coming transfer window. They may be doomed to relegation, even under the management of Harry Houdini; but players like Andros Townsend, Julio Cesar and the tenacious Stephane Mbia have impressed.
Whilst I appreciate that young Englishman Andros Townsend has only been at QPR since the end of the January transfer window, his huge impact on the club cannot be ignored. Since he joined on loan from Tottenham, he has been a breath of fresh air in a poor team, with his mazy runs and powerful shots terrifying any defence he has come across. Indeed, he even set a Premier League record in their last game at home to Wigan, where he dribbled past a defender 14 times in the 90 minutes. He has arguably had a bigger impact in 3 and a half months than the rest of the squad have had in 8.
Brazilian stopper Julio Cesar, an August signing from Internazionale in Italy, has also had a fine season. He started off shakily, making a couple of errors in a live match at home to West Ham; but since then he has picked up his game and demonstrated why he was/is an international goalkeeper, with a string of stunning saves. A double save from Jermain Defoe and then Emmanuel Adebayor in a bore draw with Tottenham was a particularly highlight for the 33 year-old number 33.
Cameroonian midfield powerhouse is another player who has had a solid debut season at Loftus Road. Whilst his disciplinary record is poor, that is natural for a player of his type and on his day, he can utilise his strength impressively to control the middle of the park. This August signing from Marseille is still only 26 and he will undoubtedly be sought after by many clubs wishing to add a bit of steel and resolve to their midfield.
Although they are cut adrift along with Reading at the bottom of the Premier League, there have been some positives for QPR this season; Townsend, Cesar and Mbia are three of them.
