Rangers suffer final day defeat

Newcastle waved goodbye to the Coca-Cola Championship in style by bringing up their century with a 1-0 victory at QPR.The Magpies, a club in turmoil when they were relegated 12 months ago, made short work of the second tier and became the fourth side to rack up 100 points or more in a season after romping to the title. The first chance of an uninspiring opening half fell to Newcastle's ex-Hoops winger Wayne Routledge but he saw his effort easily saved by Radek Cerny, before Akos Buzsaky and Jay Simpson spurned openings for Rangers. The second half was just 15 seconds old when Shola Ameobi charged past former Toon defender Peter Ramage and was hauled down, allowing the referee to show Ramage a red card. And the visitors capitalised on their one-man advantage, scoring the decisive goal in the 71st minute through Peter Lovenkrands.Joey Barton's pass split the Rangers defence and Lovenkrands, who had been on the pitch for 17 minutes, beat the offside trap before lofting his finish over Cerny and into an empty net.
