Port Vale shock QPR in Carling Cup
11 Aug 2010 - 11:06:02
Championship side Queens Park Rangers have crashed out of the Carling Cup at the first hurdle after suffering a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Port Vale on Tuesday night.
The League Two outfit stormed into a two goal lead through Justin Richards and Sean Rigg at Loftus Road and Richards grabbed his second soon after the interval.
Substitute Antonio German offered the hosts hope, but the visitors scored a fine victory and they are in the hat for the second round draw.
Shrewsbury Town will be on cloud nine after beating Charlton Athletic 4-3 in an epic at the New Meadow.
The travelling side dominated the opening exchanges and looked to have settled the contest inside 32 minutes after Pawel Abbott hit a brace and Lee Martin added a third.
But a stirring comeback saw Jake Robinson, a Yado Mambo own goal and Danny O'Donnell bring the scores level and Matt Harrold was the hero of the hour as he notched the winner.
Morecambe scored a fine 2-0 win over Coventry City, Rochdale beat Barnsley 1-0 at Oakwell, Crewe Alexandra defeated Derby County 1-0 and Bradford City dumped out Nottingham Forest 2-1 in other notable shocks.
Oxford United smashed Bristol Rovers 6-1 on their return to the competition after promotion from the Conference last season and Preston North End battered Stockport County 5-0.
Leeds United comfortably thrashed Lincoln City 4-0 at Elland Road and Watford, inspired by two-goal star Danny Graham, landed an easy 3-0 triumph at Aldershot.
Leicester City made hard work of Macclesfield Town before coming through 4-3, Middlesbrough staved off the challenge of Chesterfield to win 2-1 and Peterborough came from behind to beat Rotherham 4-1.
Elsewhere, there were wins for Championship sides Ipswich Town, Scunthorpe United, Norwich City, Swansea City, Millwall and Crystal Palace.
League One will be represented in the second round following successes for Brentford, Huddersfield Town, Colchester United, MK Dons, Notts County, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Leyton Orient and Tranmere while Accrington Stanley, Northampton Town and Southend United of League Two make up the numbers from the lower leagues.
