Smith move stalls

QPR's move for Portsmouth forward Tommy Smith is on hold after the Football League rejected the deadline day transfer. Former Watford man Smith signed a three-year deal with the Hoops on transfer deadline day after the clubs agreed a fee in the region of £1.5million. The 30-year-old passed a medical at Loftus Road but is now in limbo. A QPR statement said: "The two clubs are now working to bring the player to Loftus Road on a loan basis ahead of Saturday's home match against Middlesbrough before a permanent transfer is completed in January." Portsmouth's deadline day deals were further complicated when Liam Lawrence's move from Stoke was also rejected by the league.
