The Hoops came from two goals down to thump Derby 4-2 at the weekend, which propelled them into the top six - four points behind table-toppers Newcastle.

Mahon, who was promoted with Watford in 2006, told the Express: "The season I went up with Watford we were always in among that top six, top eight.

"You want to be up there because it brings confidence, especially in the Christmas period.

"If you can be up there, win two or three back-to-back, then you'll be challenging."
