The former Newcastle full-back played 30 minutes for the reserves in their 1-0 defeat by MK Dons after seven months on the sidelines.
"It felt great to be back out there, it's been a long time in coming," he said.
"It feels as though I have overcome a massive mental barrier.
"I've coped well in training and joined in with the lads over the last month but this was a big step for me."
