Defensive gamble paid off for Warnock

Danny Shittu and Fitz Hall may have cemented their places in the QPR defence for the promotion run-in.

Boss Neil Warnock took the unusual step of dropping his first-choice centre-half pairing of Matt Connolly and Kaspars Gorkss against Ipswich on Tuesday night. Instead he gave Shittu his second Rangers debut after he rejoined the club in January, while handing Hall only his sixth start of the season, and was rewarded with fine displays from both in the 2-0 win.

"They hadn`t played for months and I thought they were absolutely immense," said Warnock.

"If they can keep themselves fit, then it will be a great plus for the squad.

"I was thinking about changing one of the defenders but thought to hell with it really. They both played well together in the reserves, they both compliment each other, so I thought why not the pair of them?

"Matt and Gorkss have been looking a bit tired. We've had a lot of games. We've got such a good squad now that we can do that. It's great to change it and still keep a clean sheet."
