Lyle treble sends Doonhamers through

Derek Lyle scored a hat-trick as Queen of the South beat Annan 3-0 in the first round of the Scottish Communities League Cup.

The Doonhamers had a number of chances to take an early lead but they couldn't find a way past Annan goalkeeper Alex Mitchell and it remained 0-0 at the break.

Annan were reduced to 10 men in the 57th minute when defender Peter Watson picked up a second yellow card for a late challenge on Iain Russell.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors one minute later when Lyle headed Queen of the South in front from close range.

The striker made it 2-0 in the 67th minute when he slotted into an empty net after Mitchell had kept Michael Paton's fierce shot out.

The Scottish Championship side made it 3-0 two minutes later when Lyle latched onto Kevin Holt's free-kick to nod past Mitchell.
