Russell bags treble in Queens romp

A hat-trick from Iain Russell helped Queen of the South to a thumping 5-0 victory against Elgin in the first round of the Scottish League Cup.

Russell put the hosts ahead after just six minutes with a tap-in from eight yards after reacting quickest to a flick off an Elgin defender.

Derek Lyle doubled their lead after a slip at the back from the visitors put him through on goal and he dispatched with ease after coolly rounding the keeper.

Clever work by Daniel Carmichael down the wing teed up Russell for another simple tap-in to make it 3-0 on the hour mark.

The striker grabbed his third with Lewis Kidd this time the provider, crossing for Russell who volleyed home.

Elgin's misery was compounded in stoppage time when Lyle broke through once again and finished at the second time of asking after Michael Fraser saved his initial shot.
