Forbes strike sends Queen of the South through

Ross Forbes' second-half strike earned Morton a 1-0 victory over fellow Ladbrokes Championship side Queen of the South in an eventful Scottish League Cup second-round encounter at Palmerston Park.

Morton thought they had taken the lead in the 13th minute when Denny Johnstone turned home Romario Sabajo's cross from close range but the former Celtic youth striker was ruled offside.

Queen of the South striker Derek Lyle made Morton's crossbar shake shortly before half-time with a powerful free-kick but Morton earned victory with 20 minutes to go when Forbes scored, via the upright, with a sweetly-struck strike from 18 yards out.

Forbes could have doubled Morton's lead moments later only for his shot to hit a post, but it mattered little as Jim Duffy's side held on to progress to the next round.
