Van Bommel ends career with red card
Veteran midfielder Mark van Bommel ended his playing career 20 minutes earlier than planned when he was sent-off on the final day of the Dutch season on Sunday.
The 36-year-old was dismissed for a second yellow card in PSV Eindhoven's 3-1 loss at Twente.
"That's it, it's over. It's a shame that it ended with a red card, but it sums up what a difficult season it has been for the team," said the PSV skipper.
PSV finished runners-up to Ajax who were champions for a third successive season.
Van Bommel was capped 79 times by the Netherlands and played in the 2010 World Cup final.
He also played for Fortuna Sittard, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan.
