Tim Merricks was trained by the Times newspaper and schooled in journalism at London College of Print. An early Manchester United fan, he was a regular visitor to Old Trafford until the late eighties, standing in the paddocks buying meat pies from pitchside to throw at appropriate visitors such as Mickey Quinn.
