Stephen developed in the Liverpool Academy, spending eight seasons as a professional with the Reds before moving on to Blackburn Rovers in January 2007. He won his first cap for England in June 2008 and was a member of the squad for the 2010 World Cup finals but did not add to his total of appearances during the tournament.
