Simon King is a central defender who was outstanding for Gillingham in his first two seasons at the club. Simon is a solid tackler who is commanding at the back. After signing from Barnet in the summer of 2007 he immediately established himself in the team. Simon's form earned him the club's Player of the Year award in 2008-09 when he was also selected in the PFA League Two team of the season. Simon had the misfortune to suffer an ankle injury in a pre-season friendly at Bromley in the summer of 2009 and it was not until February 2011 that he returned to the first team, coming off the bench in the home win over Rotherham. In the following game against Crewe he was again sidelined, this time with hamstring trouble, but he was back in the side shortly before the end of the season.
