Sam Hird is a versatile defender with Doncaster Rovers. Locally-born, he developed as a trainee with Leeds, but it was only when he joined Rovers on loan towards the end of the 2006-07 season that he made his bow in senior football. A permanent transfer followed in July 2007 and since then Sam has established himself in the first-team squad. Often used as a substitute in the early part of 2010-11, he earned a regular role in Rovers' defence due to a number of injuries to other players. He operated mainly at centre back, but also played right back and even as a holding midfielder on occasions. Sam has now made 130 appearances for Rovers and was offered a new contract for 2011-12.
