Richard Smallwood signed his first professional contract for Middlesbrough at the age of 17 after impressing at youth and reserve team level. Richard is a central midfielder who possesses a high level of awareness and understanding. He has also filled in at centre back for the reserves. Richard has been capped by England at U18 level and has been on standby for the U19 squad. Richard made his debut for Boro at Nottingham Forest in October 2010, going on to make a real impact under manager Tony Mowbray. He enjoyed a run of games in the centre of midfield, culminating in his first goal for the club in the 3-0 win at Cardiff City in the penultimate game of the campaign.
