Peter Hartley is a left-sided or central defender who plays for Hartlepool United. Recognising that his chances of making progress were restricted playing for Sunderland's reserves, he opted for a move to his hometown club in the 2009 close season. Benefiting from regular first-team football, Peter turned in many mature and consistent performances during 2009-10 and established himself as the club's first choice left back. With Evan Horwood then being signed to fill this position, Peter was moved into central defence for the 2010-11 season. This proved to be an inspired move, as he formed a great partnership with Sam Collins and became recognised as one of Hartlepool's outstanding players over the campaign.
