Paul Scharner is a versatile player who signed for West Bromwich Albion as a free agent at the end of the August 2010 transfer window.

He is comfortable both in the centre of defence and in a central midfield role. Paul is a cultured player who is a capable ball winner. He was a regular for the Baggies throughout the 2010-11 season, mostly featuring in his favoured midfield slot although he also covered in defence during Jonas Olsson’s absence with injury.

After beginning his career in Austria with Austria Vienna and Salzburg he spent time in Norway with Brann Bergen where his form attracted interest from the Premier League. Paul joined Wigan in January 2006 and became an instant hero for the Latics fans when he scored the winning goal on his debut against Arsenal in the Carling Cup semi-final first leg encounter at the DW Stadium.

He made over 150 appearances during his stay before leaving when his contract expired. Paul plays for Austria at international level and currently has more than 30 caps.
